Jesus from Cradle to Grave

Robert J. Miller & Thomas Sheehan

LECTURE

The Son of God, Born and Raised
The Christian creeds proclaim Jesus as the Son of God who was born of a virgin and was raised from the dead. This lecture examines the diverse meanings that the concept "Son of God" has in the Bible, what early Christians meant when they called Jesus by that title, and how their conviction that he was the Son of God influenced their beliefs about his birth and resurrection.

Friday, 7:30–9 P.M.

WORKSHOPS

Born of the Virgin Mary
Traditional Christianity proclaims that Jesus was conceived without a human father, a claim also made in ancient times about certain "pagan saviors." This presentation will explore such questions as: What did this belief really mean in the ancient world of the early Christians? Was the story of Jesus' virgin birth meant to be taken literally or symbolically, and what difference does it make? In light of the historical evidence, what meaning can the virgin birth have for contemporary Christians?

Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-NOON

Awakened on the Third Day
In a nearly unanimous vote, the Jesus Seminar agreed that the resurrection proclamations are not reports of an historical event. This session will trace the idea of resurrection from the Book of Daniel to the end of the first century C.E. and discuss why the affirmation that Jesus was raised from the dead is better understood as a claim of faith than a statement of fact. The presenters will conclude by engaging participants in discussion about what meaning the stories of Jesus' birth and resurrection can have for contemporary Christian faith.

Saturday, 1:30–4 P.M.
